The days when it was Industrial or New Beat. The turning point was Techno, in the times before it was cool or had even been named. The first people to do so were Goa Gil (It’s really THE Goa-guru and a completely insane hippie from San Francisco) and his friends, who were living in Goa and experimenting with various musical styles to dance to since the late 60’s (They made a LP with their post-industrial band Kode IV on Belgium’s KK label).Īnyway, in the 80’s there was still no Goa-Trance in Goa, at that time you’d be likely to hear Talking Heads or Yello. By the early 90’s, people in Goa have found out the wonderful effect of the Acid music on a stoned head and started to further develop the style. Although the fab of Goa has dropped by the late 80’s, a hard-core group of Europeans and Americans have remained in that place. During the late sixties Goa has turned into a beach for freaks, rock stars, travelers, and various other excitement hunters, who lived by the ancient mantra of “sex, drugs and rock and roll”. Now let’s jump to the sixties and remind ourselves of a place called Goa in India. But also music is constantly evoluting… That’s why there is Goa-Trance right now!! Evolution affects not only the physical forms life takes but also its behaviour, and homo sapiens has certainly developed some remarkably complex cultures and societies over the millennia. Where there is life there is evolution it’s a part of the deal. Life is everywhere we look, from worms in the soil beneath our feet to tiny plants in the purest spring water, in the air we breathe. As such, it is unique among all music in its fundamental importance. In a time of environmental apocalypse, pandemics, xenophobia and authoritarian regimes, psytrance culture is exactly what this world needs. Although it has had many ups and downs throughout the years, it has yet endured as a global music and cultural phenomenon.

Although it commercially peaked in 1995, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that it reached critical mass in the Western Hemisphere, especially Mexico and Brazil. It is most popular in Israel, Germany, Japan, Australia, and the U.K., and is typified by psychedelic/bohemian/hedonistic/ sybaritic/privileged/hippie lifestyles valuing ethical multicultural communities operating within an international outdoor festival scene. Psytrance began in Goa, India in the early 1990s by vacationers who brought it back to their respective homes. Stylistically, Psytrance is more hypnotic, “trippy,” and repetitive than other electronic dance music genres. So we can conclude that aside from creatively converted “recordings” from deep space and similar esoterica, Psytrance, with its 140 BPM tempo correlation with the relaxed brain state with some bells and whistles tacked on like ornaments on a Christmas tree, is the driest, most applied science music genre known to man. As such, how it works is highly technical in nature. It takes a little while for your mind to become entrained with the rhythm, and while you do not have to be on drugs to feel this effect, they certainly help. Psytrance, formerly known as Goa Trance, is a subgenre of trance music characterized by arrangements of rhythms and layered melodies created by high tempo riffs usually around 140 beats per minute, which mirrors 8-12 hertz in brainwave activity, correlating to a relaxed, meditative mental state in the human brain.
